Which Crozet schools are public, and which are private?
Eight schools serve Crozet, Virginia. Six are public, in Albemarle County's western feeder pattern: Brownsville, Crozet, Ivy and Virginia L. Murray Elementary, then Joseph T. Henley Middle School, then Western Albemarle High School. Two are private — The Field School and Miller School of Albemarle.
The whole system fits on one screen, which is the part that surprises families coming from a big district. Nobody in Crozet is choosing a high school. The one decision that varies house to house is the elementary zone, and that line is drawn by street address rather than by subdivision.

These are the elementary districts Albemarle County records against the parcels in each neighborhood. ACPS describes the districts shown in the county’s GIS application as unofficial. The 22932 mailing address reaches well past the named neighborhoods — parts of White Hall share it. A home out there carries a Crozet address but can sit in a different elementary zone. None of the neighborhoods above are affected, but a rural 22932 listing is worth checking parcel by parcel in the county's GIS viewer.
What is the Western Albemarle feeder pattern?
The Western Albemarle feeder pattern is the path every public-school student on this side of Albemarle County follows. Four elementary schools — Brownsville, Crozet, Ivy and Virginia L. Murray — converge on Joseph T. Henley Middle School, which sends every student to Western Albemarle High School. Different starts, same destination, and no branching at any point after fifth grade.

Albemarle County Public Schools lists one middle school and one high school for each of the four western elementary zones — Brownsville, Crozet, Ivy and Murray. The elementary zone is the only school decision that varies from address to address on this side of the county.
The trade-off. Crozet’s school system has no escape hatch. One middle school, one high school, no magnet option and no in-county public alternative — and if your address lands in an elementary zone you did not want, the remedy is an attendance-area waiver that does not come with a bus.

Are there private schools in Crozet?
Two, and both are unusual in structure rather than generic prep schools. The Field School of Charlottesville is an all-boys school for grades 5 through 8 on Crozet Avenue in town. Miller School of Albemarle is a co-ed day and boarding school for grades 8 through 12, on an 1,100-acre campus southwest of Crozet.

Albemarle County's pre-K runs on Head Start and the state-funded Virginia Preschool Initiative — needs- and income-qualified rather than universal, and free to families who qualify. It depends on the street, and four of the twelve Albemarle County schools with designated walk zones are in Crozet's feeder pattern — Brownsville, Crozet Elementary, Henley Middle and Western Albemarle High. Brownsville's walk zone reaches the second roundabout in Old Trail. Crozet Elementary's covers only the streets from Ballard Drive to St. George Avenue. Yes, and in Albemarle County a street can itself be the boundary. The county's own description of its school district layer says the boundaries are not parcel based and frequently travel along streams, roads, or no feature at all. That is why every zone on this page is stated per parcel, and why the address check matters more than the neighborhood name.Did Crozet school zones change recently, and will they change again?
The western elementary boundary last moved in 2022, when 219 students were reassigned from Brownsville Elementary to Crozet Elementary — so any zoning list published before then is out of date. Looking forward: at its 14 August 2025 meeting the school board was told Western Albemarle High was running almost 200 students over capacity, and that a hypothetical fourth county high school would require a county-wide redistricting study. Western Albemarle runs roughly a 16-to-1 student-teacher ratio and is Fully Accredited by Virginia for 2025-26. Its swim program is the clearest measure of its athletic reputation: the boys' team won its ninth consecutive Class 3 state title in March 2026, and the girls' team its third straight. Academically it hosts Terra Studio, Albemarle County's environmental science and sustainability pathway, which replaced the Environmental Studies Academy in May 2025. Old Trail sits directly beside Western Albemarle High School and Henley Middle, which is the shortest school run in town, and some downtown Crozet streets are walkable to Crozet Elementary. Proximity and zoning are different things, though: Old Trail and Haden Place are the only neighborhoods on this site zoned to Brownsville Elementary, and the other twelve — Western Ridge and Glenbrook at Foothill Crossing included — are zoned Crozet Elementary.
