Henley Middle School is the only middle school serving Western Albemarle, enrolling 847 students in grades 6–8 for the 2024–25 school year — up 5.3% from the year before. It's rated Fully Accredited by the Virginia Department of Education.
Every student here arrives from one of four elementary zones and moves on to Western Albemarle High afterward — Henley is the single, unavoidable middle point in the pipeline. It's also a genuine outlier for a 1966 building: a 2011 renewable-energy retrofit added a wind turbine and rooftop solar, and the school picked up a state Green Schools award for it in 2013. GreatSchools rates Henley an 8 out of 10, the same rating as Western Albemarle High.
Henley runs a Morning Enrichment program on top of the usual club list — outside instructors teaching everything from baking to filmmaking during the school day, which isn't something every middle school bothers to organize.
Middle school athletics here run through the Albemarle County Parks and Recreation Department rather than VHSL — track and field and volleyball are among the offerings, organized at the county level rather than as a school program.

The school is named for Joseph Temple Henley Jr., a former chairman of the Albemarle County School Board. It's also a genuine outlier for a mid-century public school building: a renewable-energy retrofit added a 45-foot wind turbine, 182 rooftop solar panels, and six solar thermal water heaters, funded through a 2011 federal grant plus county and private contributions. The Virginia School Boards Association recognized the county's schools with a Green Schools Challenge award in 2013, citing Henley's project among the reasons.
