Things to do

Outdoors in Crozet

Eight places inside Crozet, including a 520-acre county park, a 600-acre forest preserve, a 104-acre lake and a railroad tunnel from the 1850s you can walk a mile through. Seven more within twenty minutes, including two national park units.

Parks

Mint Springs Valley Park

Mint Springs Park Road

The county park Crozet families default to: 520 acres, a one-acre swimming beach with lifeguards in season, a fishing pier, a playground, reservable shelters, and five miles of steep forested trail climbing the ridge behind the water.

Middle-dam construction runs through December 2026 — Middle Lake is drained and closed, the upper lake is at lowered levels, and parts of some trails are shut. The beach is seasonal, and the trails are genuinely strenuous.

Parks

Beaver Creek Park

Minutes west of downtown Crozet

A quiet trout-stocked reservoir of 104 acres inside a 219-acre park, free to enter and open 7 a.m. to dark. Gas motors are banned so the water stays silent — kayaks, canoes and electric trolling motors only. It is the training water for the Western Albemarle High School rowing team.

Swimming is prohibited in the lake. Fishing requires a Virginia license.

Parks

Claudius Crozet Park

1075 Claudius Crozet Park

The town's civic living room, and not a county park at all — 22 acres owned and run by a community non-profit since 1958. Athletic fields, a year-round pool, a 1.5-acre dog park, courts, and a paved 0.85-mile walking and skating loop. Both Arts & Crafts festivals happen here.

Pool and fitness studios require membership or a usage fee. The fields, loop and dog park are open to all. Parking is free but fills fast on festival weekends.

Trails

Blue Ridge Tunnel

215 Afton Depot Lane, Afton

The best walk in the region and it costs nothing. Claudius Crozet engineered this rail bore under Rockfish Gap in the 1850s; when it opened in 1858 it was the longest tunnel in North America at roughly 4,270 feet. It reopened as a trail in 2020 after twenty years of restoration, and runs 2.25 miles each way.

Unlit end to end — bring a real headlamp, not a phone. It holds 50–65°F year-round with water dripping from the greenstone ceiling. No restrooms, no water, and small lots that fill. The east trailhead here is flat; the Waynesboro side adds hills.

Parks

Chiles Peach Orchard

1351 Greenwood Road

A working orchard the same family has farmed since 1912, and the anchor of the local calendar: strawberries in spring, cherries in early summer, peaches in July, apples and pumpkins into November. Farm market, bakery, ice cream parlor and a tasting room on site, all running on solar.

Open April through December only, closed Thanksgiving. October weekend picking is ticketed and reservation-only. No dogs on the property.

Water

Sugar Hollow

Moormans River Road

Where Albemarle County runs out and Shenandoah National Park begins. A 47-acre reservoir stocked with trout for bank fishing, the Moormans River trail behind it, a 4.6-mile round trip to Big Branch Falls, and an 18-mile loop with 3,300 feet of climbing for people who want that.

Swimming and boating are prohibited in the reservoir itself. The Blue Hole is a mile and a half upstream on the river, and the path there is tricky with stream crossings — waterproof boots. Parking is a small pull-off that fills early.

Trails

Patricia Ann Byrom Forest Preserve

Northwest of Crozet, toward White Hall

Six hundred acres of preserved forest with multi-use trails open to hikers, runners, mountain bikers and horses. Panoramic views, regular wildlife, a picnic shelter and accessible restrooms — and very few people.

The county's own description calls many of these trails steep and strenuous. This is not the casual-stroll option.

Trails

Crozet Connector Trail

Downtown Crozet to Lickinghole Basin

A network of mostly flat dirt and gravel paths linking downtown to Lickinghole Basin and out through the neighborhoods, built and maintained by the volunteer Crozet Trails Crew. It is the reason you see strollers and running groups out on a Thursday evening.

Which neighborhoods connect to it is a real question worth asking before you buy. Maintenance depends on volunteers.

Playgrounds

Wildrock

Near Crozet

An outdoor nature playscape built for children rather than adults — the option when the trails are too much.
