The Field School is a private, nonsectarian middle school for boys in grades 5 through 8, located right on Crozet Avenue — the only private school actually inside Crozet. It enrolls roughly 85 students, all boys, with a deliberately low student-teacher ratio.
It's a genuine alternative to the public middle-school track rather than a feeder into it: families choosing Field School are opting out of Henley Middle for a smaller, single-sex, character-focused program, then typically move on to a public or private high school afterward — Western Albemarle among them, but not automatically. Because it's a small private school, GreatSchools doesn't publish a numeric rating for it — that rating relies on state-reported test data, which private schools don't submit.
It's an opt-in alternative that overlaps the tail end of elementary and all of middle school — not a required stop in anyone's zoning.
Boys arrive from any public or private elementary — there's no zoning requirement, since Field School is an independent choice, not an assigned school.

Miller School guide →Founded in September 2007, Field School first operated out of the Claudius Crozet Park Community Building before moving to the old 1924 Crozet high school building in 2009 — where it remains.
The school's motto — omnis puer scitus et frater, “every boy known, every boy a brother” — reflects its small, all-boys design. Two proposals to relocate to a larger campus (Polo Grounds Road in 2013, Barracks Road in 2016) did not move forward, and the school has remained on its original Crozet Avenue site.
