Winter here is two different seasons wearing one name. December is busy — the Winter Brews Festival at Claudius Crozet Park, a holiday market, Cookies and Cocoa at the orchard before it closes, and two regional light shows running into January. Then it stops.
January and February are the quietest months of the Crozet year, and anyone deciding whether to move here deserves to hear that plainly rather than discover it in their first winter. The orchard is shut, the market is between seasons, polo is five months out. What remains is the indoor pool at Crozet Park, the tasting rooms, the restaurants, the library, and the trails — including the one walk that is genuinely better in the cold, because the inside of the Blue Ridge Tunnel is warmer than the outside of it.

Blue Ridge Tunnel · 215 Afton Depot Lane
The tunnel holds 50 to 65 degrees every day of the year, which in February means walking into the mountain to warm up. The Parkway leaf traffic is months gone, the lots are empty, and the whole thing is free — 2.25 miles each way through an 1858 rail bore.
Unlit end to end, water underfoot, and the greenstone ceiling drips. A real headlamp and proper shoes, regardless of the season. No restrooms on the trail.
Claudius Crozet Park · Early December
Regional craft beer in a winterized outdoor setting at the community park, and the one event that gets the town outside together in the cold months. It sits between the two Arts & Crafts festivals in the park's annual calendar.
December 5 in 2026. Held outdoors in December — dress for standing still in a field.
Chiles Peach Orchard · Second weekend in December
The orchard's last event before it closes for the winter: a hot cocoa bar, sugar cookie decorating, holiday characters, and letters to the North Pole. Squarely aimed at children, and the bookend to a season that opened with strawberries in April.
This one rests on a single source — confirm with the orchard before planning a trip around it. No dogs on the property.
Crozet · December
The farmers market's one winter outing, running in December after the main Saturday season has ended. Smaller than the summer market and weighted toward makers rather than growers, for obvious reasons.
The regular Saturday market does not return until early May.
Veritas, Afton · Boar's Head, Charlottesville
Veritas Illuminated turns the vineyard into a light installation from late November into early January, and the Winter Wander Trail of Lights at Boar's Head runs on a similar window. Neither is in Crozet, but both are close enough to be part of a Crozet December.
Both end in early January. After that the regional evening calendar is genuinely bare.
Claudius Crozet Park · 1075 Claudius Crozet Park
The Aquatics & Fitness Center at the community-owned park runs year-round, which makes it the only swimming in Crozet between October and June. The paved 0.85-mile loop, the courts and the 1.5-acre dog park stay open through the winter too.
Pool and fitness studios are membership-based. The loop, fields and dog park are open to everyone.
Crozet and White Hall
Winter is when the local tasting rooms are actually pleasant — Stinson's converted garage, White Hall, Grace Estate, and Starr Hill's taproom all without the summer crowd. This is the season locals go, and the season you can talk to whoever is pouring.
Winter hours are shorter and vary by room. Call before driving out, particularly in January.
Winter is the cheapest season in Crozet, and not entirely by choice — the things that charge admission are mostly closed. What stays open is either free or a membership you are paying for anyway.
