Summer runs on water and fruit. The swimming beach at Mint Springs opens with lifeguards on duty, the pool at Crozet Park is going daily, peaches come in through July at an orchard the same family has farmed since 1912, and polo at King Family moves to a five o'clock start specifically to get out of the afternoon heat.
The heat is the honest part. Central Virginia in July and August is humid and afternoon thunderstorms are routine, which is why so much of what people actually do here in summer is either in water, under trees, or after five. The single strangest option is the Blue Ridge Tunnel — it holds between 50 and 65 degrees all year, so a mile-long walk through the mountain is the coldest place in the county on a ninety-degree day.

Mint Springs Valley Park · Mint Springs Park Road
One acre of beach on a spring-fed mountain lake with lifeguards on duty, inside 520 acres of county park. This is the default Crozet summer afternoon, and the fishing pier and playground mean nobody in the group is stuck doing nothing.
Beach access is seasonal only. Middle Lake is drained and closed through December 2026 for dam work, with parts of some trails shut and the upper lake at lowered levels.
Chiles Peach Orchard · 1351 Greenwood Road
July is what the place is named for. The same family has been growing peaches on this land since 1912, and pick-your-own runs through the season alongside a farm market, a bakery turning out cider donuts and fudge, and an ice cream parlor.
No dogs on the property at any time. The parking lot in July tells you how many people drove out from Charlottesville.
Chiles Peach Orchard · First weekend in August
The best single event of the Crozet summer, and it is a fundraiser: the Crozet Lions Club runs it and the money goes back into the community. Ice cream made on site at the peak of the harvest, in a place that has been harvesting for over a century.
August 1–2 in 2026. It is known to sell out — arrive early rather than at the end of the day.
Spring Valley Orchard, Afton · Mid-July into August
Fields of sunflowers in bloom at the Chiles family's Afton orchard, running from mid-July into the middle of August. Same operation as the Crozet orchard, twenty minutes further west, and the reason plenty of people make the drive over the ridge in high summer.
A narrow bloom window — roughly a month, and it does not wait.
King Family Vineyards · 6550 Roseland Farm
In July and August, Roseland Polo pushes its Sunday start to five o'clock instead of noon, purely to get out of the heat. That turns it into an evening rather than an afternoon — four chukkers, tailgates on the grass, the ridge going gold behind the field. Free to attend.
Tailgate spots are mostly first-come. Weather and field conditions cancel matches.
Sugar Hollow · Moormans River Road
The wild swimming hole locals name when you ask about wild swimming, a mile and a half upstream on the Moormans River from the reservoir parking area, at the boundary of Shenandoah National Park.
Swimming and boating are prohibited in the reservoir itself — the Blue Hole is on the river above it. The path is tricky with stream crossings. Parking is a small gravel pull-off that fills by mid-morning on summer weekends, and there are no facilities of any kind.
Blue Ridge Tunnel · 215 Afton Depot Lane
The tunnel holds between 50 and 65 degrees every day of the year, which on a ninety-degree August afternoon makes walking a mile into a mountain the most effective air conditioning in the county. Free, 2.25 miles each way.
Bring a jacket — genuinely. Unlit end to end, so a real headlamp, not a phone. Water underfoot, no restrooms, and the lots are small.
Pro Re Nata · 6135 Rockfish Gap Turnpike
Summer is when the outdoor shipping-container stage at Pro Re Nata earns its keep, with live music four nights a week and a beer garden built around it. Starr Hill runs its own patio nights with food trucks and weekend brewery tours.
Both are family and dog territory rather than adults-only rooms — Pro Re Nata especially.
Summer is the one season here with a real admission price, because the county charges entry at the swim parks — and at Mint Springs during the swim program you pay that fee whether you are swimming, hiking or walking a dog.
